Two Ways to Deal With a Tree Stump
After a tree is removed, you're left with a stump. It's not just an eyesore — stumps attract termites and carpenter ants, create tripping hazards, and can send up new shoots for years. You have two options for dealing with it: stump grinding or complete stump removal. Here's the difference and when each method makes sense.
Stump Grinding: Fast, Affordable, and Low-Impact
Stump grinding uses a powerful machine with a rotating carbide-tipped wheel to chip away the stump from the top down. We grind 6–12 inches below ground level, which is deep enough to prevent regrowth and allow you to plant grass or landscaping over the area.
Pros: • Much cheaper than full removal • Faster (most stumps take 30–60 minutes) • Minimal yard damage — the machine is precise • Wood chips from grinding fill the hole and make great mulch • No massive hole to fill
Cons: • Roots remain underground (they decompose naturally over 5–10 years) • Not ideal if you need to build on the exact spot (foundation, fence post) • Large surface roots may still be visible
Best for: Most residential situations. If you just want the stump gone so you can mow over the area, plant grass, or put in a flower bed, grinding is the way to go.
Complete Stump Removal: Thorough but Invasive
Full stump removal means extracting the entire stump and root ball from the ground using heavy equipment — typically an excavator or backhoe. This leaves you with a clean slate but also a large hole.
Pros: • Removes everything — stump and roots • Required for construction projects on the spot • No underground decomposition to deal with
Cons: • Significantly more expensive • Leaves a large hole that needs filling with clean soil • Heavy equipment can tear up your yard, driveway, or landscaping • Takes much longer • Not practical for stumps near structures or utilities
Best for: Commercial lot clearing, construction preparation, or situations where underground roots would interfere with planned structures.
Our Recommendation for Most Homeowners
For 95% of residential situations in the Manning and Sumter area, stump grinding is the better choice. It's faster, more affordable, and leaves your yard in better shape. The remaining roots decompose naturally underground and won't cause problems for your lawn or landscaping.
We only recommend full removal when you're planning construction directly on the stump location — for example, pouring a concrete pad, installing a fence, or building an addition.
At Fleming's Quality Tree Care, we include stump grinding with our tree removal service at a discounted package rate. If you have old stumps from previous removals, we're happy to grind those too.
